Photography Club February 2013

Despite being a bitterly cold night February’s photography club meeting still had a good turn out last week.  In the December meeting people were asked to contribute to monthly topics and someone suggested that we all talk about our favourite photographer and why we liked them.  So this month saw us all bringing in our favourite books.

People’s favourites varied from the better known Don McCullin, Joel Sternfeld, Richard Billingham and Paul Graham to less well known photographers like Wolf Suschitzky and Mimmo Jodice.  However, the most interesting photographer we talked about was Vivian Maier.  Not even a professional photographer her work was discovered unexpectedly at an auction in Chicago. Maier took over 100,000 photographs during the second half of the twentieth century and those images provide an incredible insight into urban America during that time.

If you are interested you can read more about her and the discovery of her work at http://www.vivianmaier.com  In the meantime here are a few of her photographs.
